It Can Happen In An Instant

My morning exercises get a regular mention in these pages. I have used them to highlight the benefits of discipline and routine; of doing something in awareness; and of pushing through to the very end. But this is one aspect I was unsure I’d get to write about, although I shouldn’t be too surprised. It’s about how persistence pays off; proof that you were right to carry on even though prospects appeared bleak sometimes; and that it can all change in an instant.

Made Beautiful By Reflection

Why, with some people, does it seem as though there has been no self-reflection at all? How is it that they make it into their 50s and 60s with their manipulative games intact, flourishing ignorance and a seasoned knack for arrogance or negativity? And why do they appear oblivious to the effects their behaviour has on those around them, or to the fact that they might, with a little effort, become even better than they already think themselves to be?

Keep Doing What Works

Find whatever works for you and keep doing it. But be warned: it’s not as easy as it seems. In the beginning you are likely to see short-term results which will motivate you to continue. However, it’s when your progress curve levels out, or when you are close to your goal, that the hard work starts, because that’s the point when you need to be disciplined. That’s the point when you need to remind yourself how you got there and carry on doing whatever you’ve been doing.

Be True To Who You Think You Are

Four people, four stories. All of them different, but all with something in common. Two are bound by family, two by career, and they stand like four points on a compass; connected opposites. The first person is aiming for a promotion he’s not sure he wants. The second is downsizing his career against all the logic of ambition. The third is constrained by what he thinks his family wants for him, and the fourth has to decide whether or not to have a family of his own.
