Relax Into (Your) Nature

Monday 30 September, 2019

I had the distinct feeling that it’s all about using simple movements to learn to relax. Every slight motion reveals imbalances in the body. Standing still, seeking to let go in every instant and allow gravity to carry our weight into the ground, it’s noticeable how the body holds itself together unnecessarily. The Earth supports (and even nourishes) us, our skeletal and muscular system is designed to function to the highest degree, and yet we deem it necessary to introduce extra tension. As if letting go would cause things to collapse.

Clarity & Creation

Saturday 28 September, 2019

The other example from the recent Qi Gong workshop came in a break between the exercises. The teacher and I talked about awareness. Without it, nothing can happen. Karaj had shown me that when you see things clearly, they begin to shift. Change occurs just by paying attention. So if passive awareness is enough to generate movement, what happens when it becomes active?

A Chance To Heal

Wednesday 25 September, 2019

Another workshop, another 4 hours spent concentrating on the body. Presence, was the first point on the flip-chart list. Another seven would appear during the course of the afternoon, as the teacher continually emphasised that it is not about the exercises. It’s about the work you do whilst exercising. It’s about alignment, stability and calm. And it’s about letting go. More words on the list – just a handful of many possible points of attention.

Courage In Every Story

Wednesday 11 September, 2019

We came together to tell our stories – every one a hero’s journey of adventure, adversity, and transformation. Enveloped by the picturesque, attention-to-detail landscape of de Baak’s trademark hospitality, we connected easily. A group of international trainers with a diverse range of skills and abilities, our goal was a simple one: to share our uniqueness in ways which would help each other to help the people we serve – those individuals, groups, and companies seeking to grow in ways they may not even be aware of.

We Are Wonderful. All Of Us.

Wednesday 7 August, 2019

At the start of this year, in the middle of Winter, I was committed to the realisation of the True Self – that which lies beyond the conditioned, worldly self. It felt as though, after all the self-development work I had done, I had the finish line in my sights and all I had to do was move deeper and deeper into the richness and beauty of spiritual freedom. Spring and Summer, however, brought inescapable insight, and as we approach the out-breath transformation into Autumn, things look very different.

A Tragic Breakthrough

Thursday 1 August, 2019

We hadn’t spoken for well over 20 years. Not because we’d fallen out. We weren’t close enough for that. We had know each other as kids at school and through football, and we drank in the same pubs growing up. In time, he began travelling the country with work, and eventually I left the country. I hadn’t seen him since. But two years ago he contacted me, having read some of my writing. This was his first message to me:

What The Body Has To Say

Tuesday 30 July, 2019

Before I come to the event which tipped this whole sequence over the edge, there are a number of loose ends to tie up. They relate to points 3, 7 and 9 from the first post in this series. There’s a Qi Gong workshop, the briefest of conversations, and an acupuncture session. Although decidedly different experiences, they all contribute by confirming and deepening the focus on the body.

Always Know That You Always Know

Wednesday 24 July, 2019

The first step was the abandonment of our video projects. We’d had big plans: 37 videos for the Instruction Manual, another 20 for Season One of the Tile 9 videos. Unfortunately, I was getting increasingly uncomfortable with the T9 stuff. With respect to my work, I could never be as sure of the Tile 9 material as I am with the first eight, and yet that had become the main focus of our business approach. It was also the greater strain on our time and energy. Significantly, my disillusionment with the direction we were taking extended to all aspects of my work.

Seeing The Gift

Friday 15 February, 2019

It happened because I got drawn into the concept of personhood; identifying with the veneer rather than with the stuff underneath. It’s okay that it happened because I saw it more clearly, and seeing is half the battle. And it’s a sign that I am doing well because my script only fights back when there is something to fight against.

Write & Become More Aware

Thursday 24 January, 2019

If I send you to the cinema to watch a film of your choice, you will undoubtedly enjoy yourself and be entertained. If I send you again, and this time I ask you to write a half-page summary of the film when it’s over, you will still be entertained, but you are likely to pay more attention as you watch events unfold on the big screen. You will be more engaged with the material, more observant, perhaps even making mental notes of details you wish to record.

Let Go. Be Empty.

Wednesday 9 January, 2019

This collection of quotes from various posts (mostly from last year) are meant to serve as reminders in my daily practice of letting go, remaining in the emptiness, and experiencing all of life in the purity of its momentary essence, without expectation, judgement or attachment. There are also quotes from the days in November when I was too tempted by my mind. They have been included here as a reminder to remain vigilant and not get cocky.

It All Feels So Real

Saturday 24 November, 2018

I was caught out again recently; dragged once more, over the course of two discussions, into the world of emotions. They are so unbelievably real at the time. There seems no room for anything else apart from the strength of feeling and the conviction of thoughts which support and perpetuate. When the fog lifts and the chance comes to reflect, it is clear just how tricky it can be to remain centred in the Self when the pull of worldly existence is so convincingly real.

The Team & The Individual

Monday 15 October, 2018

The best thing you can do for your team is to work on yourself. If everyone does that, and people support each other in their respective development, the team will grow and mature. So, too, will the individual. PRACTICE and DISCIPLINE are the foundations of the work. They are qualities you will need to return to again and again as you seek to change certain habits. It can be difficult at first, but if you pay close attention you will be able to SEE YOUR PROGRESS, no matter how small. And it’s important that you see the small steps, because if you wait for the big leaps you will easily become downhearted.

It’s A Game Changer

Wednesday 22 August, 2018

There was a definite shift during the retreat. I can’t say it happened in an instant, but it happened early on, and deepened each day. It grew out of the experience of The Invitation. I saw clearly how being able to drop the identity and rest so effortlessly in the is-ness, meant two things. Firstly, I no longer had to be the person I had worked so hard to be (despite my attachment to it). This alone was a liberating insight, and as with every other breakthrough from the retreat, the shift came from experiencing it. It anchors the realsiation in a way not possible through mere cognition. (See also ‘We Are The Sum Total Of Our Experience’.)
